The Role

An opportunity exists for an ambitious corrosion scientist to join a world-class research team in the Electrochemistry Group at NPL. You will be joining a multi-disciplinary group that is currently engaged in a range of research activities across the themes of corrosion, interfacial chemistry and catalysis, electrochemical imaging, fuel cells, electrolysers and batteries. The initial focus of your work will be in the development of advanced measurement techniques for lifetime assessment of engineering components in energy applications.

Advancing your research skills, you will develop close links with industrial and academic organisations and have the opportunity to present your research at international meetings. Adaptability, an enquiring mind, and an enthusiasm for exploring new directions will be key attributes. Good presentational skills and an eagerness to promote your research are essential.

The successful candidate will have a good first degree and relevant PhD. Practical experience in corrosion testing, in particular stress corrosion cracking and corrosion fatigue, would be advantageous. Experience in mechanical testing, electrochemical techniques and advanced materials characterisation would also be beneficial.


  • Excellent problem-solver, with record of achievement in a R&D environment.
  • Experience in corrosion-related research, with evidence of industrial impact desirable.
  • Track record of conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary project team, and as collaborator to academic & industrial partners.
